What is a Genetic Counselor?

My name is Kristina M. Sedlak and i have a B.S. in Biology from the Appalachian State University and a Master's degree in Human Genetics from North Carolina State University. I am a certified genetic counselor. As a genetic counselor my job is to work with patients so that I can fully understand their family and medical history. In this way, i help patients so that I can fully understand their family and medical history. In this way, I help patients who may be at higher risk for certain genetic disorders and diseases better understand their risks. I also work with couples who want children to understand their risks of certain genetic disorders and the chances of passing on certain birth defects of genetic disorders to their unborn children. Genetic counselors are an important member of the health care team, working with patients and supporting through this process.
